Quick comparison

  • Up-front cost: wood is lower; composite costs more per square foot.
  • Maintenance: wood needs cleaning, staining and sealing every 1–3 years; composite needs an occasional wash.
  • Lifespan: well-kept wood decks often last 10–20 years; quality composite boards often carry 25+ year manufacturer warranties.
  • Humidity and rot: composite resists rot, mold-related decay and splintering better than wood.
  • Heat: darker composite boards get hot in direct summer sun; lighter colors and capped boards help.

When wood makes sense

Pick pressure-treated wood if you want the lowest starting price, plan to sell within a few years, or like the natural look and don't mind regular deck staining and sealing.

When composite or Trex makes sense

Pick composite if you want a low-maintenance deck that still looks good years from now, especially on a shaded or damp lot where wood tends to mildew. Trex is one of the most common composite brands in Huntsville. Learn more on our composite deck installation and Trex deck installation in Huntsville pages.

What about the frame?

Even composite decks are usually built on a pressure-treated wood frame. Proper joist spacing, joist tape, flashing at the house and solid footings matter more for a long-lasting deck than the surface boards. If your current deck frame is soft or loose, start with a deck repair inspection or a full deck replacement.
